North Carolina State University students enrolled in ARC 232: Introduction to Structures and Materials recently competed in a competition known as Blockfest sponsored by the Carolinas Concrete Masonry Association, Adams Products Company and Johnson Concrete Company. There were two areas of competition: one in which students designed and built a wall with concrete masonry units, and one in which students designed a concrete masonry unit. The event was held Saturday, April 4, in the shadow of Dorton arena on the NC State Fairgrounds complex at the entrance to the Southern Ideal Home Show. The winning team in the unit design portion of the competition will attend the NCMA (National Concrete Masonry Association) annual meeting in Chicago in August and compete against the winning teams from similar competitions held at USC (Southern California) and Georgia Tech. They will be given the opportunity to present their design at the NCMA midyear meeting.
