Nestled in the McDowell Mountain foothills overlooking a broad expanse of golf course with multiple mountain and city light vistas, this custom residential estate was completed in late 2007 and is a celebration of authentic materials, craftsmanship and attention to detail. The estate contains a total of 9,335 livable square feet (867 square meters) divided between a two-story four bedroom main residence and an adjacent two-story guest house.

The owners, who currently have their main residence in the Chicago area, provided design goals at the start of the project that were  sraightforward and direct—the best residential design and construction possible integrating interior and exterior spaces while using authentic materials that captured the multiple near and distant view opportunities of the site. The incorporation of natural stone veneer on a significant portion of the residence and site wall surfaces and the inherent importance of traditional craftsmanship during its installation was also a priority. These criteria were central to forming the site and space planning for the home, leading to the creation of a plan arrangement containing rotated wings and spatial components that capture the view opportunities presented by the site. This also allowed the exterior massing of the home to be equally varied with interspersed volumes of stucco and natural stone surfaces. The rear yard  perimeter wall composition comprised of curving and orthogonal wall segments, responds to the negative edge pool, spa and turf layout along with providing a varied and interesting external composition when viewed from the adjacent golf course.

As evidenced by the photos, the project contains meticulous attention to detail throughout and especially within the extensive hand-cut full thickness natural  stone wall veneer with brick veneer accents then incorporated at windowsills, opening headers, arches and soffit surfaces. After careful review of multiple veneer samples and application techniques at the start of the project, the stone and brick were then applied for over a year in individually custom-cut pieces along the perimeter of the site and residence wall surfaces. Over 26,700 square feet (2,480 square meters) of stone was installed. Upon completion, the character and craftsmanship of the entire project, but especially the stone and brick veneer surfaces exceeded the owners’ expectations and concept images that were originally provided. The result is an estate that provides them with an escape that they look forward to returning to now and long into the future. CMD
